One whiff of that resin and fiberglass was enough
to hook him into a lifetime of surfing!
It was the summer of 1960.
A 10 year old junior life guard
gets his first paddle out on real surfboard.
He paddles through the waves of Lido Beach, New York,
closely following the rowboat manned by the captain
of the lifeguards. “OK now drop your right foot into water
to paddle to the right, drop your left leg into the water
to turn left. The instructions were simple enough
but the thought of pivoting around and stroking into
the waiting waves didn’t come until a few weeks later.
But that smell of the fiberglass resin
had already intoxicated his mind.
From that moment on it was all about living to surf.
And on that very special day a promise was made.
A promise that one day he would escape
to the beach and do nothing but surf the waves.
What happened between then and now
is an extraordinary story of a surfer life well lived.
